Typhon on macOS: install and run games with CrossOver

Typhon runs as a Mac application. CrossOver handles Windows game installation and launching; compatibility varies by game.

What you need

  • An Apple Silicon Mac: M1 or newer. There is no Intel Mac build of Typhon.
  • macOS 13 or later.
  • CrossOver installed separately with a valid license or available trial. It is not bundled with Typhon.
  • Free space for downloads, unpacking and the game itself.

CrossOver’s own requirements depend on its version: check the CodeWeavers website before installing it. Meeting the launcher requirements does not guarantee that a particular game will run.

Install Typhon

  1. Choose macOS / Apple Silicon on the download page.
  2. Compare the ZIP archive’s SHA-256 with the value on that page; the verification command is provided there.
  3. Extract the archive and move Typhon to Applications.
  4. If macOS blocks the unsigned application’s first launch, follow the download page instructions for the verified archive.

Do not change system-wide macOS security settings for this installation. The instructions on the download page apply only to the Typhon application.

Check CrossOver and the Steam environment

Install and open CrossOver, then open Typhon. In Settings → About, check Game runtime: it shows CrossOver or reports that it is missing.

Since Typhon 0.5.1, games use a shared Steam environment in CrossOver by default. Choose the environment in Settings. On an individual game page, Run together with Steam lets you change this choice. If a game needs Steam, install and configure Steam in that environment.

An environment, or bottle, is an isolated Windows environment inside CrossOver. A component installed in another bottle does not automatically become available to your game.

Install and launch your first game

Add your own source and choose a release, or add a game already installed. Wait for both downloading and installation to finish. If an installer window opens, check whether it is waiting for input.

Before the first launch, check the selected EXE. If several files are available, choose the game client rather than a server or helper program. Then launch the game from Typhon.

If the game does not start

First check that Typhon detects CrossOver, the selected environment exists, and the path points to the game EXE. Try launching through CrossOver in the same environment to help distinguish a game or environment issue from a launcher issue.

A successful installation does not guarantee compatibility. Anti-cheat, drivers and some graphics features can prevent launching. When asking for help, include the Typhon, macOS and CrossOver versions, the game, the failing stage and the exact error message.
